What Is Somatic Experiencing?
Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a body-based trauma therapy developed by Dr. Peter Levine. Rather than focusing only on thoughts or narrative, SE works directly with nervous system physiology.
Trauma is not just what happened, it is how the body remains organized around survival. Somatic Experiencing helps the nervous system renegotiate fight, flight, freeze, fawn, and collapse responses so they no longer drive current experience.
This is not exposure-based therapy. It is precise, titrated, and paced for integration.
Somatic Experiencing is a gradual process of recalibrating the nervous system, not a quick intervention. Because this work addresses underlying patterns of regulation and survival response, meaningful change unfolds over time rather than through intermittent sessions. I typically work with clients on a consistent weekly basis to support steady integration and long-term embodied transformation. I do not offer short-term solutions-focused, cognitive-behavioral, & talk centered work aimed at surface symptom reduction.
How I Practice Somatic Experiencing
I practice SE in a clinically rigorous, culturally precise, differentiation-based way. I use titration, sequencing, pendulation, and SIBAM tracking to work precisely and gently with survival responses.
I carefully differentiate trauma physiology from autism, ADHD, OCD, chronic pain, and identity-based stress. Many high-masking neurodivergent adults have had trauma misattributed, or neurodivergence pathologized while living within social-institutional-historical, colonial, heteronormative, ableist contexts of systemic intersectional oppression. Accurate differentiation allows interventions to be aligned & socially contextual within systemic power dynamics rather than stigmatizing. I hold Somatic Experiencing within a decolonial, historical, cross-cultural, trans-affirming context as a modern form of body-based healing practices that have been practiced by cultures throughout the world .
Our work supports:
• safe unmasking for high-masking autistic/AuDHD adults
• reduction of internalized shame
• reorganization of trauma-driven survival patterns
• development of identity-congruent nervous system regulation
• increased steadiness, boundaries, and embodied agency
Who Somatic Experiencing Is For
Somatic Experiencing may be a strong fit if you are:
• living with developmental, relational, medical, or shock trauma
• experiencing dissociation, shutdown, or chronic hypervigilance
• navigating burnout or chronic stress physiology
• high-masking autistic or AuDHD and seeking safe unmasking
• carrying identity-based stress (Queer, Trans, poly/enm, kink/bdsm, BIPOC, diaspora, intergenerational harm)
If your life appears “fine” but your nervous system is exhausted, SE can support change at the physiological level, not just insight.
What Sessions Are Like
Sessions are steady, collaborative, and experiential. We track sensation, impulse, emotion, breath, boundaries, and micro-shifts in real time. Protective responses are approached without force or shame.
Change emerges through integration, not performance.
Weekly therapy is required for this depth of work.
